Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Thanksgiving Week
The Black Hawks stay relatively close to the Cedar Valley with a pair of road games this week which bookend the annual Thanksgiving matchup versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. This holiday season, the team can be thankful for the expansion of Highway 20 to four lanes, shortening the time spent on the bus to and from Sioux City for a 6:35 Wednesday night tilt with the Musketeers. The two clubs are currently the only USHL teams with multiple double-digit goal producers. Waterloo's Matej Blumel and Emil Ohrvall each have 11; Bobby Brink (12), Marcus Kallionkieli (11), and Martin Pospisil (10) have all reached the milestone for Sioux City. Thursday and Saturday, the Hawks play the RoughRiders; Saturday's game will be at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The teams have met at Young Arena on Thanksgiving night every year since 2000. Waterloo and Cedar Rapids have not faced each other yet this regular season.
Rising Power Play Tide
Waterloo is at the top of the USHL in power play conversion rate, during a season in which power play scoring has been up. After five special teams goals Saturday versus the Lincoln Stars, the Hawks' mark is now 35.3 percent. That figure compares favorably with a collective USHL mark of 21.4 percent this year and 18.5 percent for the 2017/18 season. The last team to score five power play goals in one contest was the Fargo Force on March 23rd last season (Fargo had six in that game versus the Omaha Lancers).
Half Century, Part I
A four-point surge (three goals, one assist) on Saturday has lifted Black Hawks' forward Emil Ohrvall within two points of 50 for his USHL career. Ohrvall's performance during Waterloo's win against Lincoln matched a career best; he also had four points (two goals, two assists) versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on February 11, 2017. This season, he now has four multipoint games, including two hat tricks.
Half Century, Part II
Defenseman Hank Sorensen has climbed to 48 career points. He charted three assists on Saturday - all on the power play - versus the Lincoln Stars. Sorensen joins James Marooney as the second Black Hawk with three power play assists in one game; Marooney did it on November 2nd versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Mikey Anderson is the only defenseman to record 50 career regular season points for the Hawks since 2015/16.
Weekly Recap
Patrick Guzzo scored his first USHL goal Friday, but it was the only goal in a 2-1 Waterloo loss to the Tri-City Storm. The next night, offense was ample in a 6-3 win versus the Lincoln Stars. Five different Black Hawks recorded multiple points during the game.
