Retracing Their Steps

The Black Hawks return to Fargo and Sioux Falls this weekend. Waterloo's upcoming road trip mirrors a swing through the same two towns on September 30th and October 1st. The Hawks won those two games, 2-0 versus the Force and 5-2 against the Stampede respectively. The wins sent Waterloo off on a roll toward six consecutive victories. This weekend trip will mark the final Hawks 2016/17 regular season visits to Scheels Arena and Sanford Premier Center. Waterloo plays in Fargo on Friday and Saturday nights, then in Sioux Falls during the late afternoon on Sunday.

Power Play and Shorthanded

Kevin Charyszyn scored his second power play goal of the season on Saturday versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The tally makes him one of two United States Hockey League players so far this season to have recorded both multiple power play and shorthanded goals. The Fighting Saints' Colin Theisen also has two of each. Overall, Charyszyn is Waterloo's third-leading scorer with eight goals and seven assists. The 15 points in 23 games outdistances 12 points in 54 appearances last season.

On Holiday

Last December, the Black Hawks won their final game prior to Christmas break, 4-3 in a shootout while visiting the Youngstown Phantoms. That decision broke a trend: prior to 2015, Waterloo had lost on four consecutive occasions when their final pre-holiday game had been on the road. However, road teams were generally more successful on the final date before Christmas last winter, delivering a 5-3-0 mark. The last time the Hawks met the Stampede in pre-holiday circumstances comparable to this coming Sunday, Sioux Falls took the day, 3-2 in overtime at Sioux Falls Arena in 2003.

Making a Contribution

Hunter Lellig played in a pair of games last weekend, his second stint with the Black Hawks. The defenseman joined Waterloo while Mikey Anderson, Jake Ryczek, and Nick Swaney prepared to skate in the World Junior A Challenge. Lellig tallied an assist Saturday versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints. His first USHL point had come on October 15th against the Sioux Falls Stampede. Lellig is a Waterloo native.

Weekly Recap

The Hawks played a pair of 3-2 games against two of the USHL's hottest teams. Saturday, Kevin Charyszyn notched the game-winning goal in overtime to move Waterloo past the Sioux City Musketeers. Hank Sorensen and Shane Bowers also scored. The following night, goals from Charyszyn and Bailey Conger were not enough to keep up with the visiting Dubuque Fighting Saints.
