Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Hawks to Reckon with Force, Stampede

For the second consecutive weekend, the Black Hawks will start at home and finish on the road. Friday evening, the Hawks meet the Fargo Force for a rematch after the visitors topped Waterloo 2-1 to open the season on September 26th. All six meetings between the Hawks and Force are scheduled to be played prior to the season's midpoint. Then Saturday, it's off to Sioux Falls to duel with the Stampede. The away contest will be the first meeting with the Stampede since last spring's playoff series, which the Hawks won in three games.

Trying to Keep it Going

Forward Brock Boeser and defenseman Hayden Shaw have each recorded a point in all three Waterloo games so far in 2014/15. Boeser leads the Hawks and is tied for second in USHL scoring with five points (three goals, two assists). Shaw has three assists, all on the power play. Forward Larry Jungwirth also had assists in both games over the weekend, his first appearances at the junior level. The rookie was not in the Hawks' lineup for the season opener on September 26th.

Montour Makes Milestone

With two assists last Friday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints, Brandon Montour became the 43rd junior-era Waterloo Black Hawk to record 50 career assists in regular season play. He accomplished the feat in just 62 regular season games after leading Waterloo with 48 assists last year (his total ranked second in the United States Hockey League). Montour tacked on two more assists Sunday. As a result, he is currently tied for 33rd place in the club record book with Todd Turcotte, Jeff Kozakowski, Chad Paliquin, and Jamie Hill.

Opening a New Building

The Black Hawks will have to overcome a lot of enthusiasm and a little history on Saturday in Sioux Falls. The Stampede will host the Hawks during the first game at the new Denny Sanford Premier Center. Waterloo has been the visiting opponent for the first USHL game at three other rinks since 2003. On October 7, 2006, the Hawks fell 3-2 in overtime against the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena in Columbus. They were on the short end of a 4-2 score at Pepsi Coliseum on October 9, 2004 in the Indiana Ice's first USHL home game. The Sioux City Musketeers opened up Tyson Event Center with a 3-0 shutout against Waterloo on December 17, 2003.

Weekly Recap

The Black Hawks played and won a pair of 4-1 decisions, first against the Dubuque Fighting Saints at Young Arena Friday, then on the road versus the Lincoln Stars Sunday. Hayden Lavigne notched both wins, stopping 51 total shots. Tyler Sheehy and Brendan Shane scored goals in each contest.
