Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - The process for making indoor ice generates a substantial amount of heat from the machinery involved. Ice at a hockey rink is most effectively resurfaced with hot water. In recent years, Young Arena has channeled the by-product of the first process toward warming water up to 160 degrees before it goes into Zambonis, saving both energy and money on the second process.

Learn more about ways you can simultaneously save money and save the planet in your own home on Friday, November 2nd when the Dubuque Fighting Saints visit Waterloo at 7:05 p.m.; fans are encouraged carpool to the rink for the Black Hawks' first ever Eco-Friendly Night, presented by Green Line Polymers.

A variety of partners will be on hand with information, product samples, and the chance to win prizes. Fans will be able to sign up and receive a free tree to plant in the spring, find out more about producing their own electricity, and get insights into recycling products which can be hazardous if thrown away.

Green Line Polymers - Eco-Friendly Night presenting sponsor - is focused on sustainability, backed by a complete recycling network. With operations in the Cedar Valley and across the country, they dependably and efficiently process plastic scrap into new products. The company's culture and core values create an environment that promotes loyalty among employees, customers, and suppliers.

If your company is involved in a green business, find out about special group ticket discounts which are available on November 2nd. Limited vendor presentation spaces are also still available while capacity allows. To learn more, call the Black Hawks at (319) 296-7581.

Facts about Young Arena's environmentally-friendly practices:

-The facility recycles over 80,000 plastic and aluminum beverage containers each year.

-In 2009, the building's lights were upgraded to T5 fluorescent bulbs, which use nearly 50 percent less electricity than the rink's original lighting. By 2021, the arena anticipates a complete conversion to even more efficient LED lighting, which will further save money and power.

-Zambonis are filled only with the amount of water necessary to resurface the ice, rather than the full capacity of the machine's tank, reducing wastewater.

-Approximately 85% of the cleaning chemicals used in the arena have been converted to water-based substances, eliminating many products with potentially harmful environmental effects.
