April 1, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Games 59 and 60
The Black Hawks enter the final weekend of the United States Hockey League schedule as one of two teams still in contention for the Anderson Cup. The trophy for winning the league's regular season championship will either go to Waterloo or the Indiana Ice; if the season ends with the standings tied, the clubs would share the honor. The Hawks currently lead the standings by two points, with two games remaining. Indiana will play three times, beginning at home Wednesday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Waterloo's opponent on Friday and Saturday will have plenty of motivation. The Cedar RapidsRough Riders are trying to hold off the Fighting Saints and earn home ice advantage during the first round of playoffs. Cedar Rapids currently leads Dubuque by three points; the RoughRiders play twice, while Dubuque will skate three times.
Spectacular Trio
The Black Hawks won all three games during a three-day span last weekend. It was the fifth time Waterloo has played three games in three days during 2013/14, representing one quarter of the 60-game schedule. The Hawks went 12-1-2 under those hectic circumstances and claimed 26 of 30 possible standings points. Last weekend was the third time Waterloo swept a three-game run in 2013/14.
Sheehy Sharp on Sunday
Tyler Sheehy recorded his fourth two-goal game on Sunday during a 4-3 win against the Green Bay Gamblers. Three of the four have been earned on the road, where the Burnsville, Minnesota, native has been masterful this season. In 22 away games, Sheehy has scored 12 of his 21 goals and is +18. His plus/minus rating is +7 in 25 home games. With 49 points this season during 47 total appearances, Sheehy will average at least a point per game, even without recording a goal or assist this weekend.
Marching Forward
The Black Hawks earned an 8-2-2 record in March, outscoring opponents 49-33 over a dozen games. Liam Pecararo led the team with 11 assists and 16 points during the month. Patrick Russell was Waterloo's leading goal-scorer with 7. Brandon Montour had a team-best plus/minus differential at +9. In net, Cameron Johnson was 6-0-1 and stopped 93.2% of the shots he faced during seven appearances.
Weekly Recap
The Hawks opened Friday's game with six consecutive goals, en route to a 7-2 victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Zach Sanford and Hayden Shaw each had three points. Saturday, Blake Winiecki's goal 2:21 into overtime pushed Waterloo past the Sioux Falls Stampede, 4-3. On the road Sunday against the Green Bay Gamblers, Tyler Sheehy scored twice in less than two minutes give Waterloo another 4-3 decision.
