Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA – The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, announced the signing of two players Thursday. "We're definitely hoping that these guys bring the ‘luck of the Irish' with them," quipped Ross Vecchio, general manager of the Wild Things.

Catcher Patrick O'Brien will join John Massarelli's line of leprechauns. O'Brien was drafted from Kent State in the 17th round by the Houston Astros in 2003. At Kent State his teammates included Wild Things' players, Kyle Augsburger, Chad Kinyon, and Brady Glass. He played for Tri-City of the New York Penn League where he batted .203 in 26 games. Wild Things Randy McGarvey, Brandon Davis, Mike Collar were his teammates at Tri-City.

"Everyone accuses me of signing only Kent State and Houston Astros players, so I guess he is a perfect fit – Kent and the Astros!" said Wild Things' manager John Massarelli. "Pat is a solid catcher with some offensive punch. He'll be a great addition to the team, complementing with incumbent Randy McGarvey."

Ryan McGraw, an outfielder, was drafted as a junior from Coastal Carolina University in the 39th round of the 2003 draft by the San Diego Padres but did not sign. As a junior, the switch hitter was named All Big South Conference. He was sixth in the league with a .339 batting average, and he was fourth in the nation in stolen bases (45). McGraw returned to Coastal Carolina University for his senior year where he was injured early in the season with a broken collar bone.

"Ryan has great lead off speed; he can play both center and left field," according to Massarelli. "I see him competing for a spot in the outfield."

The Wild Things host an open try out at Falconi Field on May 7th. The team hosts the Ohio Valley Red Coats for the season home opener on May 25.
