Richmond Roosters News Release

Washington, Pennsylvania – Richmond dropped a heartbreaker 2-1 to Washington Monday night. The game was a duel between the starting pitchers for each team until the skies opened up and forced a delay in the action. Matt Schweitzer and B.J. Borza started the game for Richmond and Washington respectively. The Roosters missed a chance to score in the second inning when Blake Woods got to first on a throwing error by the shortstop and Ty Harriott singled with 1 out to move Woods to third. B.J. Borza got Tony Sanguinetti to strike out and Nathan Gravely to fly out to end the inning.

Each pitcher continued to mow down batters until the umpires halted the game at the end of the fourth inning due to a heavy amount of rain moving through the Washington area. The delay lasted for one hour and four minutes and caused the Wild Things to pull Borza and dip into the bullpen earlier than they expected. Schweitzer stayed in the game for Richmond and continued to pitch shutout baseball through eight innings.

Richmond came inches away from scoring in the top of the eighth inning. Gerald Miller tried to make it to home from first base on a bomb from Kevin White that went to the wall in right field. Right fielder Mike Arbinger bypassed the cutoff man and threw a strike to the catcher to nail Miller at the plate.

The game remained deadlocked until Richmond's Josh Hollingsworth turned on a ball in the top of the ninth and sent it over the left field wall to give the Roosters a 1-0 lead. It was Hollingsworth's third homer of the year and the only run Richmond would get.

Washington got the leadoff runner on in the bottom of the ninth off Schweitzer and moved him second on a bunt. He moved to third on the same play when no one was covering third and scored two batters later when Mike Arbinger hit a double and tied the game at 1-1. Arbinger took third on a passed ball and scored the winning run when Randy McGarvey singled to center to make it 2-1.

Matt Schweitzer pitched all nine innings for Richmond but took the loss after giving up both Washington runs in the ninth inning. Corey Ohalek got the win for Washington despite giving up the home run to Hollingsworth. Richmond gets a day off tomorrow before heading to Ohio Valley Wednesday for a three game set.
