Tough Homestand for the Mavericks
May 31, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Mid-Missouri Mavericks News Release
The Mid-Missouri Mavericks dropped to 0-5 on the season with a heartbreaking 8 - 7 loss to the defending Frontier League Champion Rockford RiverHawks on Monday evening. Despite rallying for three runs in both the 8th and 9th innings, the Mavs once again came up just short of picking up their first win of the 2005 campaign. Former University of Missouri pitcher Derek Roper picked up the win for Rockford, allowing one run and seven hits in six innings of work.
The loss marked the fifth straight for the Mavericks and finished off what proved to be a tough home- stand to open the season. Mid-Missouri dropped their season opener to their cross-state rivals - the River City Rascals - by a score of 9 to 3. The Mavs got seven strong innings from starter Steve Soja, who gave up only a single earned run on nine hits. Danny Shuck picked up the loss in game two, as River City once again topped the Mavericks by a score of 7 - 2. Despite being outscored 16 to 5 in the two game series, the Mavericks out hit the Rascals 21 to 18. Friday's game was postponed due to inclement weather and will likely be made up in August.
Saturday's series opener against Rockford was also a heartbreaker for the Mavericks. Lefty Auggie Rodriguez pitched brilliantly, striking out four, picking off two base runners and not allowing a run in six innings of work. The Mavericks led the game 4 - 2 going into the top of the ninth, but the Hawks touched closer Quentin Jones for three runs and took a 5 - 4 lead. Mid-MO then loaded the bases in the bottom of the last frame, only to watch as clean-up hitter Thomari Story-Harden ground into a game ending double play. The second game of the Rockford series was not a fun one to watch as Rockford put up nine runs in the third inning on their way to an 18 - 7 victory.
Brent Matheny has been a machine in the first five games of the season. The Mavericks' outfielder is currently leading the Frontier League with a .571 average and has hit safely in all five games. Matheny also is tied for the league lead with four doubles. Catcher Matt Oaks is also striking the ball wall...he's currently seventh in the league with a .444 batting average. The Mavericks will take the 31st off and will head to Windy City to tangle with the Thunderbolts on June 1st. Windy City currently sits tied for fourth place in the Frontier League's West Division with a 1 and 5 record.
