Washington Spirit News Release
Washington, D.C. - The Washington Spirit and Leveling the Playing Field (LPF) have collected over 10,000 donated sports bras all around the DMV that will be distributed to women and girls in the community. The partnership is part of the Nationwide Community Impact Program, a NWSL league-wide service initiative.
With such a major milestone already reached, the Spirit continues to make collections to distribute to the community. As the club's Nationwide Community Impact Ambassador, Spirit forward Ashley Hatch collected donations at this week's U.S. Women's National Team match in DC and will do so again at Washington's home match at Audi Field against San Diego on Saturday afternoon.
Fans have the opportunity to vote for their team's efforts during Nationwide's service initiative this month. The winning team will be awarded $25,000 for its community group, which would be enough to provide at least another 1,200 sports bras. "The Spirit's continued work with LPF represents its ongoing commitment to assisting the greater Washington, D.C. community in every way possible," said Jonna Humphries-Valente, Spirit VP of Communications. "We are beyond excited to have the opportunity to provide such substantial support to one of our trusted community partners."
This initiative with LPF is a part or a larger overall effort to bring equity and access to sport for girls in the community. The Washington Coalition of Women's Professional Sports (WCWPS), formed in March 2022, is a coalition aimed to provide a purposeful and significant impact on the Greater Washington community by connecting the region's women's professional sports teams through service-focused collaboration. This coalition is made up of the Washington Spirit, Washington Mystics, DC Divas and DC Shadow, in association with LPF.
