Washington Spirit News Release
West Palm Beach, FL. - The Washington Spirit announced today that the club will not play against the Orlando Pride tomorrow. Due to false positive COVID-19 tests that limited training this week, it was determined that it would be in the best interest of Spirit players and staff that the preseason match be canceled.
"The COVID-19 scare we experienced this week threw us into a spin," said Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke. "The false positives recorded during our testing rhythm reverberated around the squad, with emergency protocols limiting our activities in many ways. Players are neither physically or mentally prepared to perform at the level we'd hoped for at this stage, and I'm not convinced we are doing the right thing by pushing to play this preseason game. Our players are disappointed. But player safety is paramount for me, not just physically but mentally too."
In accordance with CDC guidelines and collaboration with the club's medical team at INOVA Health System, the players and staff quarantined at the hotel and received multiple negative tests since the original false positive tests. The team has resumed training and will travel back to Washington, DC on Sunday.
