
Warriors Weekend Review: Warriors Split Two Shootouts With Jets

FLINT, MI - The Michigan Warriors came into action on Friday night only four points behind the 7th place, Janesville Jets. With two against the Jets the past weekend, the could crawl out of last place. The Warriors were still in search of their 2nd home victory of the season when the two teams took to the ice, Friday night.
After a scoreless first, the Jets got on the board first at the :17 mark of the 2nd. Daniel Kucerovy scored on a 2-on-1 break by firing a shot over the glove of Trevor Gorsuch. Nick Albergo made it 2-0 Jets with a wrap around goal at 5:06. The Warriors cut the lead in half at 14:17 of the 2nd on a power play goal by A.J Marcinek. It was only the fourth goal the Warriors had scored with the man advantage this season. After two, the Warriors trailed 2-1.
In the third, the Jets Mike Sullivan gave Janesville a 3-1 advantage early. Jake Faiella answered at 9:30 on a 4-on-2 rush. Faiella had just been released from the penalty box. The Warriors were down by a goal in the final minute. Janesville was shorthanded and the Warriors pulled their netminder for a 6-on-4 advantage. Zach Szajner tied the game on a redirected shot from the blue line by Brock Labelle. We were headed for overtime.
In overtime, nothing was decided. The Jets out shot the Warriors 3-2 in the extra session.
In the shootout, the Jets scored the lone goal in the sixth round as Jordan Himley gave the Jets the extra point and the victory on Friday night.
On Saturday, the Warriors sent Dillion Kelley between the pipes and he did not disappoint. The Jets out shot the Warriors, 18-5 in the first period Saturday but the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie after the first. Brock Labelle got the Warriors scoring started at 6:41 only to be answered by Nick Albergo at 13:53.
The second period belonged to the Warriors in the shot department, but not nescessarily on the goal sheet. The Jets actually took the lead at 12:51 on a power play goal by Ruslan Pedan. The Jets had a 5-on-3 advantage and Pedan walked in from the point and sniped Kelley over the right shoulder. However, the Warriors would tie just :36 later on a shorthanded goal by Connor Lyons. Connor poked the puck past the defense and was off to the races. He beat Brock Kautz on the glove side on a shot from the left circle. It was 2-2 going into the third. The Warriors out shot Janesville in the 2nd, 14-8.
The Warriors took the lead just :15 into the third on a goal by Captain Martin Gruse. He wrapped the puck around the net and it hit a Janesville stick and went over the shoulder of the goaltender. The Warriors could not hold on to that third period lead however, the Jets tied it at 15:11 when Nick Albergo scored his 3rd goal of the series. For the second night in a row, we were headed for overtime.
Janesville outshot the Warriors 4-2 in overtime. No goals were scored.
In the shootout, the lone goal was scored by Zach Szajner in the third round. The Warriors won their second home game of the season, but did not gain any ground on Janesville in the standings as they are still four points back.
The Warriors next games are the weekend of December 7th, when the Warriors host the Soo Eagles and the Port Huron Fighting Falcons.
