Santa Cruz was led by Joe Alexander, who scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench. Seth Curry scored 23 and recorded a game-high five steals, while Dominic McGuire logged a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Cameron Jones added 16 points, while Kiwi Gardner chipped in with 13. Ognjen Kuzmic, currently on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, had eight rebounds.
Rio Grande Valley was paced by Robert Covington, currently on assignment from the Houston Rockets, who led all scorers with 28 points and grabbed a game-high 13 boards. Rockets assignee Troy Daniels scored 26 points, while Kenny Kadji scored 20. Gary Talton recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 assists.
There were three lead changes in the game - all in the first three minutes. Tim Ohlbrecht hit a jump hook shot with 9:01 left in the first to put the Vipers up 7-6 and they never trailed for the rest of the contest. The Warriors pulled within three later in the first, but Rio Grande Valley connected on three straight three-pointers to extend its lead to 12. The Warriors were able to trim the Vipers' lead to five midway through the third quarter, but Rio Grande Valley went on an 11-0 run and ultimately won by 14. Rio Grande Valley's 138 points and 77 first half points are all-time highs for a Santa Cruz opponent.
The Vipers shot 51.7% from the field compared to the Warriors' 47.9%. Rio Grande Valley held the edge on rebounds (50-41), assists (29-24) and points in the paint (50-44). Santa Cruz committed fewer turnovers (15-18) and had more steals (11-8).
