Toledo Walleye News Release

Toledo, OH - The Walleye had another hard-fought battle with the Cincinnati Cyclones on Sunday. This time, the Walleye came out on top with a fast-paced attack, more stellar goaltending, and a tremendous late-game comeback.

The Cyclones made the home team play catch-up most of the way, as Barret Ehgoetz tallied the game's first goal late in the first period. On the power play with just over two minutes left, Ryan Del Monte collected a shot-turned-pass from the blue-line, shoveled it to Ehgoetz, who buried it in the open net for the goal lead.

It would not take the Walleye long to answer, however: 38 seconds later to be exact. The Captain, Ryan Stokes, split the defense on a perfectly timed pass from Jamie Milam. Stokes took the extra step and scored the tying goal over the glove of the netminder, Robert Mayer. Stokes made a play on a Cincinnati breakaway later without allowing a shot attempt.

Toledo once again tied the game on a breakaway later in the second. This time, Chris Robertson made a tremendous defensive play at the blue-line. On the penalty kill, Robertson played the defensemen tight, broke up the pass, recovered the loose puck, and took it the distance for the short-handed score. It was his first goal as a Toledo Walleye.

The home team was on the kill at the end of the period as well, but still looked to take the tie to the third period. Unfortunately, the Cyclones dumped the puck into the Toledo zone. With six seconds left, Dustin Sproat stabbed at the puck to keep the play alive to the left wing, who passed it to Matt Pierce for the goal. Cincinnati would take the 3-2 lead to the third. The three goals also did not indicate the kind of night goalie Billy Sauer had in net for Toledo. He made 36 saves during the game and kept the contest close.

While Sauer did his part, the offense waited for its chance to strike, and they would on a power play. In the third period Sebastien Piche led a rush and slid a pass past Mayer. The puck went in thanks to a slap of the stick by Evan Rankin to tie the game. It was his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

With 1:32 left on the clock, the Walleye took control of the game. Robertson took a pass from Justin Hodgman and went a step ahead of the defense as he crossed the blue-line. Robertson found enough room to get the shot off and beat Mayer for the game-winning goal. The win keeps the Walleye at second place.
