Toledo Walleye News Release
Walleye Notes
Three wins over a busy week : Wednesday night vs. Colorado started a very busy week for the Walleye with four games over five days. Toledo had four different goal scorers in Wednesday's 4-3 win. Shane Berschbach scored a pair of goals Friday night in Fort Wayne but the Komets ran away with the contest 5-2. The Walleye rebounded Saturday night scoring two goals late in the third period to beat the Komets in Toledo 4-3. To finish out the week, goaltender Jeff Lerg posted 24 saves in a 2-0 win over Kalamazoo.
Attendance record hit: Saturday was the 13th time this season Toledo had a standing room only crowd as 8,300 entered the Huntington Center. That broke the single season record of 12 sellouts set in the 2009-10 season and matched during the 2014-15 campaign.
Home is where the wins are: By picking up three home victories this past week, the Walleye have set a new record for consecutive home victories with nine in a row. The previous high was seven straight home wins set from January 25 through March 1, 2015. The Walleye have a home record of 19-5-0-1 on the season and only Missouri (24) has more home victories in the ECHL.
Berschbach's goal run: He scored twice Friday night in Fort Wayne, two more Saturday night against the Komets and then another on Sunday vs. Kalamazoo to give Shane Berschbach a five goal weekend. He now has a new career best in goals with 20 passing the 15 he scored during his first pro season last year. The 24-year-old forward also had four assists during the week and leads Toledo with 51 points (20G, 31A). He is tied with former Walleye forward Tyler Barnes for fifth in the ECHL in scoring.
Lerg ties a record: The sixth career shutout in Toledo for Jeff Lerg on Sunday tied a Toledo ECHL record for career shutouts held by David Goverde who played with the Toledo Storm from 1995-1997. Lerg has posted zero goals against twice this season as he also beat Manchester 2-0 on December 19, 2015.
Three in three ahead for the Walleye: Three straight home contests for the Walleye starting Friday night against the Brampton Beast. Toledo is 6-1-1 against Brampton this season, including winning all three games played at the Huntington Center. Saturday is the first and only meeting of the season for the Walleye against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. Former Toledo Walleye forward Troy Schwab is the assistant coach for Greenville. Sunday the Indy Fuel will be in Toledo to round out the weekend. The Walleye are 4-0-1 vs. the Fuel this year but the two teams have not played each other since December 20 at Indy.
Think Pink: This weekend is Pink in the Rink presented by Promedica, 1370 WSPD, 104.7 WIOT and Fox Sports Radio 1230 WCWA with promotional giveaways all weekend long. Friday the first 1,500 fans will receive a Pink in the Rink Wristband! The first 1,500 on Saturday score a Pink in the Rink Glove and Sunday the first 1,000 will pick a wristband and glove! Prior to Friday's game is a Hockey and Hops beer tasting event and following Sunday's game is a skate with the players!
