Walks Boost P-Nats to Series Sweep of Salem

Potomac Nationals News Release

SALEM, Va- It was a game that saw a combined 20 men left on base, 12 base on balls, two ejections, and some unquantifiable frustration bubbling to the surface from both teams, but it would be a pair of bases-loaded walks that would boost the P-Nats to an arduous 2-1 victory and a three-game series sweep of Salem.

Brad Meyers, the hard-luck loser of two games last week in which he only allowed one earned run in two starts, tossed 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball, scattering five hits. A first-inning RBI single by Jason Place gave the Sox an early advantage, bringing home Jon Hee who had doubled. Meyers pitched suberbly once again, but unfortunately left the game on the hook for the defeat in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Clint Everts (3-0) relieved Meyers and continued his mastery of Carolina League batters by retiring Kris Negron on a fly ball to centerfield.

The P-Nats once again had their struggles with men in scoring position in Wednesday's tilt, leaving the bases loaded in both the third and the fifth inning. In the fifth, however, those frustrations erupted in the form of a pair of ejections by home plate umpire Lawrence Reeves.

Danny Espinosa, a bit miffed on a called second strike in the at bat with the bases loaded, struck out swinging on the next pitch. He tossed his bat and helmet towards the dugout and Reeves wasted no time in giving the shortstop the heave-ho. Upon seeing his starting shortstop and hottest hitter tossed from the contest, manager Trent Jewett came to the defense of his player also earning an early exit. It was Jewett's first ejection of the season.

There would be no more offensive output until the seventh inning when the P-Nats' patience at the plate would reward them handsomely. Dan Nelson got the two-out rally going with a double down the right-field line, but the P-Nats then took advantage of some major wildness by reliever Jason Rice (1-2) who walked four consecutive batters, the last two bringing home the only runs the Nationals would need in the game.

Sidewinder Chris Rivera pitched a flawless eighth inning and Cole Kimball hurled a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season as Potomac completed their first three-game sweep of the season.

In a tightly contested series, all three games were decided by a grand total of four runs.

The P-Nats start an eight-game homestand Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium as they welcome the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to town for a five-game series. First pitch Thursday is 7:05 ET.
