Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, N.J., MAY 27 - Former major league right-hander Matt Wagner (3-0) tossed a complete game one-hitter as the Newark Bears won the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Camden Riversharks, 3-0. Wagner retired the first sixteen batters he faced, but lost his perfect game when he allowed a one out single in the 6th inning to Camden third baseman Lipso Nava.

Wagner, who struck out seven batters, allowed only one base runner the entire game in tossing his first complete game and first shutout in 2003.

Rickey Henderson led off the bottom half of the 1st inning with a home run to left field after having not played the past nine days. Henderson finished the game 2-3 at the plate.

Bears' right fielder Wil Quintana stroked a two out, two run triple in the 4th inning to put the Bears up 3-0. All told the Bears had seven hits off of losing pitcher Mark Nussbeck (0-1), who also pitched a complete game.
