NEWARK, NJ, May 27-The Camden Riversharks scored single runs in the first and second innings and held on to beat the Newark Bears, 2-1, in the nightcap of Tuesday's doubleheader at Riverfront Stadium to gain a split. The Bears had won the opener, 3-0.
Former Phillies second baseman Kevin Jordan delivered an RBI double in the first inning and third-baseman Lipso Nava hit a solo home run in the second to provide Camden's offense. Bears starter Tim Keinath (1-1) allowed both runs and took the loss in his first start of the season. Keinath pitched five innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits.
Newark scored their only run in the 3rd inning on Rickey Henderson's RBI single that scored Paul Esposito. Henderson, who homered and had two hits in the opener, was 2-4 in the nightcap with a stolen base.
Pete Maestrales and Jay Laflair of Newark each recorded a pair of hits as the Bears fell to 13-11 on the season, remaining 4 games behind Camden (17-7) for first place in the Atlantic League's south division.
In the opener, Matt Wagner (3-0) tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout in a 3-0 Bears victory. Wagner retired the first 16 batters he faced before Nava singled with one out in the 6th, the only base runner allowed by the Bears right-hander. Wagner finished with 7 strikeouts.
