Dayton Gems News Release

Moline, IL- Trying to complete the three game road trip this weekend with another win after coming from behind last night to beat Fort Wayne 2-1, the Gems had to be feeling confident heading into tonight's matchup with the Quad City Mallards.

The momentum from last night's win proved it was going to carry into tonight's game within the first 30 seconds of the opening period. That's when Tim Hartung notched his third goal of the season after slamming home a juicy rebound from Mallards starter Adam Russo at the 22 second mark. Then less than five minutes later former Dayton Gem and current Mallards defenseman Adam Maccarone tied the game with his first of the season when he let go of a long wrist shot from just inside the blue line that beat Gems starter Derek MacIntyre up high to tie the game at 1-1. Maccarone would give the Mallards their first lead of the night at the 17:51 mark when another shot from the point found its way behind MacIntyre with a screen in front to make it 2-1. The Gems responded with a game-tying goal of their own as Corey Couturier would score his third of the season when he got the puck, turned around and fired it right past Russo to tie the game at 2-2 with under a minute remaining in the first period. Four goals combined in the first, would this be a trend for the remaining two periods or would things be different in the second?

The trend continued into the second period, although there weren't as many goals, the scoring still told the story. Former Mallard and current Gem Chris Lipsett gave the Gems the 3-2 lead at the 9:54 mark when he bounced in a puck past Russo. But as they had done in the first period, the Mallards answered back quickly, this time in the form of Eric Giosa who tied the game at 3-3 when he finished off a breakaway attempt (caused by a Gems turnover) and slid the puck through MacIntyre's five-hole. Quad city once again used the momentum from the tying goal to retake the lead on the power play moments later as Tyler Shelast made it 4-3 at the 15:28 mark. Not only were the Gems down by one goal after two periods, they also were forced to start the third period down one man after taking a late penalty to end the second.

Quad City capitalized on the man-advantage just 25 seconds into the third period and extended the lead to 5-3 when Mike MacLean blasted a slap shot from the right wing circle. The Gems found a way to cut the lead to one as Tom Boudreau recorded his first of the season on the power play at the 17:35 mark. The story of the period and of the game was the ability of the Mallards to convert their power play chances and MacLean added his second on the night (and of the period) to push to the lead up to 6-4. The Gems just could not generate enough chances for the remainder of the game, thus resulting in the 6-4 loss.
