Vermont Mountaineers News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped Game 2 of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Northern Division finals to the North Adams SteepleCats, 3-1, at Joe Wolfe Field on Friday night. With the series now tied at one, the result sets up a decisive Game 3 at Recreation Field on Saturday night. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.

The two sides put together plenty of offense through the first four innings of play, but neither team was able to push across any runs until North Adams struck for two in the bottom of the fifth.

SteepleCats' designated hitter Zach Wall (Hayesville, N.C. / Young Harris) led off the fifth with a solo shot to left field to put North Adams up 1-0. Two batters later, rightfielder Parker Perez (Winter Springs, Fla. / Jacksonville) rolled a triple to right field. He came into score on the next play, when centerfielder Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H. / Marist) laid down a suicide squeeze to make it 2-0.

Vermont cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the eighth. First baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) led off the frame with a double, his third hit of the night. Two batters later, shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) singled to setup first and third with one out. Two batters after that, catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Dudek to score and tighten the game at 2-1.

The SteepleCats added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to come away with the 3-1 victory.

Each squad had numerous chances throughout the night, but neither could put together a big inning, as Vermont left 13 runners on base in the contest, including stranding the bases loaded in the ninth. North Adams left 12 runners on base in the game.

The Mountaineers left the bases loaded twice on the night.

SteepleCats starter Dakota Edwards (Turlock, Calif. / Bridgeport) earned the win to improve to 1-0 in the playoffs. Edwards dealt seven and one-third innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits and three walks. He struck out four.

Vermont starter Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y. / Le Moyne) took the loss, falling to 0-1 in the postseason. The righthander hurled six innings, giving up two runs (both earned) on nine hits and one walk. He struck out five.

North Adams reliever Jared Habershaw (North Kingston, R.I. / Eckerd) picked up his first save of the playoffs, surviving the ninth without allowing a run. Habershaw gave up one hit and one walk, but struck out the final two men he faced.

Saturday night's Game 3 can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
