Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Danbury, Conn. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest, 5-4, to the Danbury Westerners on Saturday night. With the loss the Mountaineers fall to 2-4 on the season.
Zach Lavy (Missouri) had the game-winning hit, an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, off Vermont reliever Jared Gesell (UNCW) to score Jake Ring (Missouri) from third and give Danbury the walk-off win.
Ring led off the ninth by reaching on an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Westerners left fielder, Josh Palacios (San Jacinto College North). After an intentional walk of Danbury catcher Brennan Morgan (Kennesaw State) to make it first and second with one out, Gesell threw a pitch that got by catcher Trey West (Le Moyne) for a passed ball during pinch hitter Alex Tuccio's (Siena) at bat. The runners moved to second and third on the play. Gesell proceeded to intentionally walk Tuccio to load the bases with one out before giving up the RBI single to Lavy.
Gesell came on in relief of Vermont starter Jim McDade (Millersville) with two outs and a runner on in the eighth. The Mountaineers held a 4-3 lead at the time. Gesell allowed back-to-back singles upon entering, the second of which came off the bat of Chris DelDebbio (Hartford) to score pinch runner Manny Cruz (Southern New Hampshire) from second and knot the game at four.
Vermont scored the first run of the game in the first inning. Danbury took a 3-1 lead in the second before the Mountaineers regained an edge, at 4-3, in the sixth.
Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville led off the sixth with a single off Westerners reliever Joey Arena (LIU Post). Blake Tiberi (Louisville) followed with a single to make it first and second with no outs. Rob Knightes (St. John's) reached on an error by second baseman Hector Gutierrez (Michigan). Gutierrez did not field the ball cleanly and then rushed the throw, which sailed over the head of first baseman A.J. Ryan (Dayton), allowing Brock to score, Tiberi to move to third and Knightes to reach second safely. Tiberi scored on an RBI single by Ian Sagdal (Washington State) to tie the game at three before Mike Krische (Canisius) hit a ground ball to the right side to score Knightes from third and give Vermont a 4-3 lead.
Mountaineers starter McDade hurled seven and two-thirds innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits. He struck out two and walked none. McDade took a no decision.
Danbury starter Tim Holmes (San Jacinto College North) went five innings, giving up one unearned run on one hit and two walks. He struck out seven.
Westerners reliever Joe Kuzia (St. John's) earned the win to improve to 1-0. Kuzia pitched one scoreless inning of relief.
