Great Falls Voyagers News Release
Billings, MT - A two-run bottom of the fifth for Billings sank the Voyagers in a rain-shortened series finale 2-0 Thursday night at Dehler Park.
Great Falls (3-3), however, claimed a 2-to-1 series win over the Mustangs for its first of the season. Billings (1-5) played its first error-free game of the series in the finale to avoid its second straight sweep to start the season.
The contest was cruising along in the fifth when a lead-off single to center by Leonardo Seminati sparked a Billings rally. With one out, Quincy McAfee popped a single to right that placed runners at first and second. Victor Ruiz then produced the only runs of the night with a double blasted to the wall in deep right. Both runners scored as Ruiz was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple.
The Voyagers' Kleyder Sanchez coaxed a lead-off walk to begin the sixth, but a falling line drive to right-center off the bat of Camilo Quinteiro was caught and resulted in a double play at first. The game was halted due to rain and hail just before the bottom of the sixth. It was called after a one-hour delay.
In relief, Omar Conoropo posted the win for Billings. Conoropo (1-0) worked five innings and gave up just one hit with four strikeouts and one walk. Carter Love took the loss for Great Falls. Love (1-1) lasted five innings and allowed just two earned runs on six hits with a season-high six strikeouts and one walk. Reds first-round draft pick (7th overall) Nick Lodolo made his professional debut with a one-inning start. Lodolo gave up a lead-off single before striking out two with a caught stealing behind him.
For the Voyagers, Camilo Quinteiro went 2-for-3 at the plate and raised his early-season batting average to .353. Victor Ruiz posted two hits and two RBIs for the Mustangs.
The Voyagers stay on the road for the first of a three-game weekend series at Missoula Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. After the six-game road trip, Great Falls returns home on Tuesday, June 25th for a three-game set against Idaho Falls.
