Great Falls Voyagers News Release

IDAHO FALLS - The Great Falls Voyagers (17-10) had their cake and ate it too as they swept a doubleheader with the Idaho Falls Chukars (12-15) with 8-4 and 7-2 wins on Sunday afternoon. The Voyagers have now won seven of their last eight games and lead the North Division by two games with eleven games left in the first half of the season.

Saturday night's series opener was rained out, so Sunday's game became a doubleheader of seven-inning contests. Game 1 matched up Brandon Parrent of the Voyagers and Spencer Patton of the Chukars. Idaho Falls got an early lead with an unearned run in the first and held that until the Voyagers tied in the third. Parrent, in his longest appearance of the year, returned to start the bottom of the fourth. Three straight Chukar hits to start the inning, followed by an RBI groundout and an RBI single chased Parrent from the context. Zach Isler (2-1) entered to finish the inning, helped by Patrick Palmeiro throwing out a runner at home plate, but Idaho Falls led 4-1.

It was all Voyagers from there as a single by Palmeiro and a double by Zac Fisher began a five run fifth inning. Justin Jirschele scored both with a two-run triple and Yoandy Barroso doubled home a pair to give the Voyagers a 6-4 lead. Barroso finished with 3 RBI in each game for six total on the day. The Voyagers added two more in the seventh as Isler pitched 2.2 scoreless innings and Joseph Dvorsky got a scoreless seventh to seal the win.

Game two began half an hour later and saw the Voyagers in control throughout. Brad Salgado drew the first of his two walks and scored on a Micah Johnson double to give the Voyagers a 1-0 lead. The Voyagers added another in the fourth on a Palmeiro double for a 2-0 lead. The Chukars grabbed one off reliever Ryan Bollinger (3-2) in the fourth to cut the lead in half before the Voyagers came to bat in the fifth.

Idaho Falls starter Clayton Schulz (1-4) got two quick outs in the inning before a walk we lost his control and walked the bases loaded. Yoandy Barroso made him pay by finishing a seven pitch at bat with a bases clearing double that expanded the lead to 5-1. Walks were decisive in the win: the Voyagers were outhit thirteen to eight but drew seven walks while handing out none. Five of the seven walks came around to score, equal to the margin of victory.

The Voyagers have two games left in Idaho Falls starting Monday night. The game begins at 7:15 PM and can be heard on ESPN Montana 99.9 FM.
