Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GREAT FALLS - The Great Falls Voyagers (24-20, 0-6) picked up many aspects of their game that had been struggling and gave the Missoula Osprey (23-21, 5-1) a fight to the finish, the Missoula ultimately held on for a 5-4 win Friday night at Centene Stadium. The loss finished the first 30game sweep suffered by the Voyagers this season and marked their eighth loss in nine games since clinching the division.
The Voyagers bats got a shot of life in the first inning when Micahel Johnson singled and scored on a Brad Salgado double - a ball that was a sure homer without blistering winds in from left - for a 1-0 lead. Yoandy Barroso later scored Salgado with a single for a 2-0 lead. Voyager starter JC Casey (4-4) allowed one run in the second before an unearned run scored in the fourth to tie the game at 2. Missoula start Yoimier Camacho (1-3) settled after the first and the game went tied to the sixth.
Casey walked the first two hitters of the sixth and was relieved for Zach Toney. Toney got two outs before a wild pitch scored the go-ahead run and Missoula moved on with a 3-2 lead. The lead was 4-2 when Tyler Williams and Patrick Palmeiro singled to lead off the seventh and Williams was pushed around to cut the lead to one. Missoula, again striking with two outs, scored a big insurance run in the eighth off Joseph Dvorsky and went to the ninth leading by two. The Voyagers were able to score once as Yoandy Barroso came across, but that was all they could muster.
Zach Voight, returning from an ankle injury suffered in college, was finally able to play his first professional game as he started at second base. Voight's night was a bright spot for the Voyagers. Voight ripped a single in his first professional at bat and grabbed both a sacrifice fly RBI and a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt at the plate while helping turn a pair of double plays in his first two innings. The first double play, in his first inning at second base in over five years, required him to plant his formerly injured ankle in front of a takeout slide and make a strong turn to get two.
The Voyagers now head to Billings for three games at Dehler Park. The first game is on Saturday night and is at 7 PM. The game can be heard on ESPN Montana 99.9 FM.
