Great Falls Voyagers News Release
June 26, 2012 IMMEDIATE RELEASE Adam Seidel Voyagers Can't Catch Streaking Mustangs GREAT FALLS - The Great Falls Voyagers (4-5) fell behind early Tuesday night against the Billings Mustangs (7-2) and were unable to catch up as they fell to Billings 9-6. The result, combined with a Missoula loss, put the Mustangs 3 games ahead of the Voyagers and Osprey in the early north-division race.
Righty Cory McGinnis (0-1) started for the Voyagers but was unable to replicate his excellent results from his first start. A trio of runs scored off McGinnis in the first, followed by another in the second, and Voyagers immediately trailed 4-0.
The Voyagers fought for two runs in the third on one hit and two errors, but Billings game back with two in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to open a 9-2 lead. The Voyagers scraped across a handful of runs in the later innings and brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth, but the team was only able to score once with the bases loaded and one out and lost their last rally opportunity.
Justin Jirschele, taking advantage of the opportunity for more playing time opened by the promotion of DJ Jarrad, knocked three hits and drew a walk in the game, giving him four hits and two walks along with two runs scored in the last two games. Andrew Virgili pitched two excellent relief innings for the Voyagers, striking out four while allowing no runs. Kyle Robinson reached base three times and scored in the game, but also failed to record a hit for the first time this season. His eight game hitting streak stands as the best in the Pioneer League in the young 2012 season.
