
VooDoo to open training camp Tuesday, January 4th

The New Orleans VooDoo will open their training camp in preparation for the 2005 season on Tuesday, January 4, when players are scheduled to report for the start of camp and their first team meeting.
The team will hold their first two practices on Wednesday, January 5. Wednesday's practices will mark the start of a 17-day camp that will feature 25 practices, including two scrimmages and three practices with the New York Dragons. The team will hold its first scrimmage on Saturday, January 8. The team will practice with the Dragons from Friday, January 14 â Sunday, January 16. The VooDoo will hold their final scrimmage on Saturday, January 22. This Saturday's scrimmage, which will run from 9:30-10:30 a.m., will be open to the public. VooDoo coaches and players will sign autographs after the open workout from 10:30 â 11 a.m.
New Orleans head coach Mike Neu enters his second season leading the VooDoo, who also return defensive coordinator Kevin Porter, line coach Junior Ili and strength & conditioning coach Adam Bailey. Special teams coordinator Ken Matous is the newcomer to the VooDoo coaching staff.
Neu will bring a roster of 36 players into training camp. A total of 18 newcomers will compete for roster spots with 18 returning players. Among the returning players are OS Aaron Bailey, the team's leading receiver in 2004, OL/DL B.J. Cohen, second team All-Arena OL/DL Tim Martin and WR/DB Lamont Moore, the team's second-leading receiver.
Among the newcomers are QB Andy Kelly, the leading passer in Arena Football League history, WR/LB Thabiti Davis, one of the league's leading receivers, DS Alvin Porter, a three year NFL veteran and FB/LB Leroy Thompson, one of the top two-way players at his position.
AFL teams are permitted to bring 37 players into training camp. Rosters must be cut to 24 players by Monday, January 24, 2005.
Following roster cuts, the VooDoo will prepare for their 2004 season opener, when they travel to Atlanta to face the Georgia Force on Saturday, January 29. Following a road contest against the Nashville Kats on February 6, the VooDoo will host the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats at the New Orleans Arena on Sunday, February 13.
