VooDoo to face Colorado in Mother's Day matchup
May 5, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New Orleans VooDoo News Release
When the New Orleans VooDoo face off against the Colorado Crush on Sunday, May 8 in the New Orleans Arena at 12 p.m., fans can expect an exciting, interactive experience leading up to the game and through its conclusion.
The 8-5 VooDoo, who are tied for third place with the Tampa Bay Storm in the Southern Division, will be facing the 8-5 Crush, who are tied for first place in the Central Division. This will be a matchup with important playoff implications for both teams. The VooDoo and the Crush are tied with the third best record in the AFL with five other teams.
Sunday's game will have a special focus on quarterbacks. New Orleans QB Andy Kelly currently has 697 career touchdown passes and needs three scoring passes to become only the second quarterback in professional football history to record 700 TD passes. In his 12th season in the AFL, Kelly has started 132 consecutive games and in 2005 is among the league's passing leaders, having completed 381-of-574 passes for 3832 yards and 77 touchdown passes. A seasoned playoff competitor, Kelly has led his teams to the postseason eight times. The Crush are co-owned by former Denver Broncos QB John Elway, the National Football League's all-time winningest starting quarterback, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004 after a 16-year career in Denver, including two Super Bowl victories.
The contest will be shown to 83 percent of the country on NBC and will be broadcast by the network's number one team of Bob Papa, Pat Haden and Lewis Johnson. In addition to their strong support of the VooDoo, New Orleans' interest in Arena Football is also evidenced by the fact that the area is the top-rated market for AFL ratings in 2005.
VooDoo fans will also be able to receive two giveaway items as a reward for their support throughout the season. The first 10,000 fans that come through the door will receive a 2005 VooDoo Team Photo, sponsored by Coyote Ugly. The first 5,000 fans that enter the arena will receive a pair of Thunder Bones, compliments of News on Wheels.
Plenty of tickets remain for the game with several pricing and seating options available. Another big crowd is expected at "The Graveyard." Through six home games, the VooDoo have recorded an average attendance figure of 15,388 fans per game, ranking third in the AFL. The last four home games have all been sold out. In order to accommodate fans, the New Orleans Saints tickets offices at 5800 Airline Drive and at the Louisiana Superdome will be open on Friday until 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. â 1 p.m.
