AFL week 15 quick hitters

Published on May 5, 2005 under Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

SCOREBOARD: Entering Week 15, the San Jose SaberCats are on pace to break the record for most points scored in a single season (966), which they set in 2003. The SaberCats lead the League in scoring with 61.9 points per game and are on pace to the finish the season with 990. If the SaberCats increase their average points per game from 61.9 to 65.0, they will become the first team in the AFL to score 1,000 points in a single season. The SaberCats hope to continue lighting up the scoreboard this Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET on FSN West and FSN Bay Area as they host the Los Angeles Avengers (8-5).

A KICK IN THE PANTS: Through 13 games this season Los Angles Avengers K REMY HAMILTON (6-1, 190, Michigan) has been on a record-setting pace. Hamilton has connected on 28-of-35 field-goal attempts for an amazing 80.0 field-goal percentage. At this rate, Hamilton would finish the season 35-for-43 and break the single-season records for field-goals (32) and field-goal percentage (72.0). Currently, Hamilton has converted 12 more field goals than the second-ranked kicker (MATT GEORGE, 16-28) and has doubled the field-goal total of the third-ranked kicker in the League (PETER MARTINEZ, 14-34)

Not only has Hamilton been out-kicking every player in the AFL, but he also has a higher field-goal percentage than 14 NFL kickers who attempted 14-or-more field-goals last season. Despite the smaller uprights, Hamilton has a higher field-goal percentage than Mike Vanderjagt (Colts, .800), Nate Kaeding (Chargers, .800), Jeff Wilkins (Rams, .792), Steve Christie (Giants, .786), Jay Feely (Falcons, .783), Josh Scobee (Jaguars, .774), Gary Anderson (Titans, .773), Billy Cundiff (Cowboys, .769), Neil Rackers (Cardinals, .759), Olindo Mare (Dolphins, .750), Lawrence Tynes (Chiefs, .739), Kris Brown (Texans, .708), Paul Edinger (Bears, .625) and Martin Gramatica (Buccaneers, .579).

ITS GOOD TO RECEIVE: Arizona OS SIAHA BURLEY (5-10, 185, Central Florida) is averaging three touchdown receptions a game and is on pace to break the single-season record of 46. With three games remaining, Burley can finish the season with 47. Entering Week 15, Burley has already had two five-touchdown reception games, three four-touchdown reception games and three tripple-touchdown reception games.

HE KEEPS GOING AND GOING AND GOING... New Orleans QB ANDY KELLY (6-3, 220, Tennessee) is slated to start his 132nd consecutive regular-season game when the VooDoo (8-5) host the Colorado Crush (8-5) this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on NBC. The streak is the all-time record for consecutive starts by a quarterback. The next closest active streak is held by Philadelphia QB TONY GRAZIANI (6-3, 215 University of Oregon), who has started 60 straight games dating back to the start of the 2002 season with Los Angeles. Kelly, who has 697 touchdown passes, can also become only the second player in professional football to throw for 700.

JUST KEEP ON RUNNING: Grand Rapids QB MICHAEL BISHOP (6-2, 215, Kansas State) needs 16 rushing yards to break the single-season record set by MAJOR HARRIS in 1991 with the Columbus Thunderbolts (429). Bishop, currently the League-leader in rushing (414), rush attempts (68) and rushing touchdowns (16), broke the single-game rushing record when he ran for 100 yards against Colorado in Week 2. Bishop looks to have another record-breaking game against the Nashville Kats (5-7-1) when the Rampage (2-12) travel to the Music City this Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET on FSN Detroit and FSN South.
