NEW ORLEANS (April 4, 2012) - The New Orleans were assigned former LSU defensive lineman and one-time Cincinnati Bengal Rahim Alem along with kicker Matt Denny, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
Alem (6'3" 263 lbs. LSU) played 44 games in his LSU career, starting 13, including 12 during his senior season. In his career, he racked up 73 tackles, 25.5 tackles for losses, and 14.5 sacks. He was named to the All-SEC second team following his breakout junior season in 2008, in which he collected 8.0 sacks. In 2007, he helped LSU win their third national title.
Alem went undrafted in 2010, but signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent just one day after the NFL Draft. He went to training camp with the Bengals but was released prior to the season on August 3, 2010. His brother is Chad Jones, another former LSU Tiger and current member of the New York Giants.
The New Orleans native attended St. Augustine High School. He was rated the second-best prospect in Louisiana in 2004. Additionally, he was a 5A first-team all-state selection and a member of the New Orleans Times-Picayune Top 20 Blue-Chip list.
Denny (6'0" 190 lbs. Carthage) stared at Carthage College (Kenosha, WI) all four of his years on the team, from 2004-2007. During his time playing for the Red Men, Denny hit 128 of his 135 PAT attempts and 40 of his 68 field goal tries. His senior season in 2007 was his best, as he hit on 11 of 17 field goal attempts and all 36 of his extra point attempts.
After college, Denny played for the Quad City Steamrollers of the AF2 in 2009. Denny went on to play for the Cleveland Gladiators of the AFL, for whom he played the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
With Cleveland in 2011, he converted 94 of his 120 PAT attempts for Cleveland, despite not being able to practice aside from pre-game warm-ups due to the team's small practice facility.
Denny attended Griffith High School in Griffith, Indiana before graduating in the class of 2004.
The VooDoo also took Justin Adams and Demarcus Robinson off the injured reserve list and placed Andre Mathis and Jerron Wishom on it.
