Montreal, October 23rd, 2009 - The Montreal Juniors hosted the top-ranked Drummondville Voltigeurs tonight. This was a tightly fought battle. The Juniors kept the game very close until midway in the last period when Drummondville scored three unanswered goals and an empty netter as they defeated the Juniors by a score of 5 to 3. David Stich, Guillaume Asselin, and Pier-Antoine Dion scored for the Juniors. Phillippe Lefebvre, Gabriel Dumont, Ondrej Palat, Sean Courturier, and Marc-Olivier Vachon scored the five Drummondville goals.
In the first period, the Juniors were not intimidated at all by the fact that they were facing the first place team in the league. They had several juicy scoring opportunities, but the period ended with no scoring from both sides. Montreal goaltender Jake Allen and Drummondville goaltender Antoine Tardif were flawless. Shots favored the Voltigeurs 10 to 8.
In the second, the Voltigeurs opened up the scoring at 11:11 when winger Philippe Lefebvre cashed in on the rebound for his fourth of the season from defenseman Olivier Hotte. The Juniors answered back on a 5 on 3 power play. Czech defenseman David Stich slapped one past Tardif from the point for his first of the season at 14:51. Hubert Genest earned the assist. Shots favored the Juniors 13 to 12 in the second. The score heading to the third was 1 to 1.
During the third period, the Montreal Juniors took the lead when winger Guillaume Asselin was on the doorstep and scored his seventh of the season at 03:57 from Louis-Marc Aubry. The Voltigeurs came back to tie the game at 6:32 when center Gabriel Dumont scored on the power play as he redirected Marc-Olivier Vachon's shot from the point. The Voltigeurs took the lead when Ondrej Palat and Sean Courturier added two quick goals and made this a 4-2 game midway through the third. The Juniors put lots of pressure late in the last period. As a result, they moved closer to tying the game when forward Pier-Antoine Dion scored right in front to make this a 4-3 game with 1:14 left in the third. The Voltigeurs responded when Marc-Olivier Vachon added the empty net with 15 seconds left. The Voltigeurs defeated the Juniors 5 to 3.
Montreal goalie and St. Louis Blue's prospect Jake Allen made 32 saves and took the loss. Drummondville goaltender Antoine Tardif stopped 33 to earn the victory. The Voltigeurs improve to 12-1-0-1 while the Montreal Juniors are now 7-8-0-1.
The Montreal Juniors will travel east as they go on a three-game road swing. They will face the Halifax Mooseheads on Thursday, October 29th, the Prince Edward Island Rocket on October 31st, and the Moncton Wildcats on November 1st. The next home game will be on November 4th as they host the Lewiston Maineiacs.
