Voltera, Markusen Added to Hogs' Roster
December 23, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.-Rockford IceHogs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Steve Martinson announced Friday that the United Hockey League club has signed veteran forward Rob Voltera and rookie defenseman Joe Markusen to contracts. Adhearing to club policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed. Both skaters aren't expected in the Rockford lineup until after the New Year.
Voltera brings added depth for the Hogs on the offensive side. Rockford's offense currently ranks third in the UHL (3.81 goals per game), but has been hindered by American Hockey League call-ups and a couple of injuries. The veteran winger has spent parts of four seasons in the UHL, most recently with the Quad City Mallards (2003-04). Last season Voltera suited up for the Victoria Salmon Kings (ECHL) and notched 15g-7a-22pts in 41 contests.
During his seven professional seasons, Voltera has played in 82 career AHL games. Besides the Mallards, Voltera has also skated with the now defunct B.C. Icemen. The winger was a team captain in B.C. during his third pro season at the age of 22.
"Rob is a big, tough player who can score," said Martinson. He's a solid veteran player who brings some AHL experience to the team. He will also bring a lot of respect and leadership to the locker room. Joe comes from one of the top college programs in the country. He's a left-handed shot and he'll add depth to our defensive core."
Markusen played collegiately at Michigan State University. The rookie d-man played in 165 games with the Spartans in his four seasons. Despite playing in 46 games in the ECHL last season, the defenseman is still considered a rookie by UHL standards. In '04-05, Markusen suited up for the Long Beach Ice Dogs, Reading Royals and Augusta Lynx. He accumulated 2g-6a-8pts in 46 total games.
Next Home Game: Wednesday, December 28 vs. Missouri River Otters. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The Hogs and Otters meet up once again at the MetroCentre. It's Wednesday and that means another FlyAway Wednesday with the Hogs, WXRX-FM 104.9, Rockford-Chicago International Airport and Allegiant Air. One lucky fan will win a pair of airline tickets from Allegiant Air.
