Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill.- Rockford IceHogs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Steve Martinson announced Wednesday, that the United Hockey League club has signed goalie Ronnie Vogel for the 2005-06 season. Adhering to club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Vogel makes his return to Rockford after spending the 2004-05 season with the Basingstoke Bison (BISL). The Hogs puck stopper suited up for Rockford during the 2003-04 campaign and established him-self as the club's workhorse. Vogel set a franchise record by appearing in 65 games for the Hogs.

The London, Ontario native was voted co-MVP in 02-03 (with Dave Paradise). Vogel tied a then franchise record with 26 wins for Rockford and received three call-ups to the American Hockey League with three different teams. Although he didn't get any ice time, the Milwaukee Admirals, Manitoba Moose and Cincinnati Mighty Ducks all called for Vogel's services.

"We expect to have two excellent goalies which allows us the flexibility to loan a goalie to the AHL," said Martinson. "With the probability of having an AHL contracted goalie, it gives us the comfort level of two top goalies that we didn't have last season."

Vogel was instrumental in the shootout as well, an area in which Rockford struggled last season. The 5-9 goalie set a franchise mark with an .818 shootout save percentage. Despite an inept defense in front of him, Vogel had a respectable .905 save percentage while blocking pucks for the Hogs.

With Vogel inked, Rockford has 13 players released that are under contract for the fast approaching season. In front of Vogel include forwards Robin Big Snake, Vince Malts, Preston Mizzi, Jason Notermann, Olivier Proulx, Bruce Watson and Chad Woollard and defensemen Ryan Carrigan, Matt Gens, Corey Hessler, Nathan Lutz and Steve Pelletier.
