GENEVA, Ill. - Tyler Viza (4-1) has now collected at least 11 strikeouts in three different games this month, but Saturday night he reached a career-high fanning 12 Sioux Falls Canaries (25-41) in the Kane County Cougars (31-36) win at Northwestern Medicine Field by a score of 7-4.
Viza's start wasn't as efficient as previous games. Sioux Falls tagged him for two runs in the 1st, but the right-hander picked up his first two strikeouts of the night. By the 3rd, it was 3-0 Canaries, but Viza already tallied six punchouts.
The Cougars bats wok up in the bottom of the 3rd, as Josh Allen doubled home Anfernee Seymour for the first run off of Angel Ventura (6-6). Nick Lovullo tied the game in the 4th with a two-run single before Seymour gave the Cougars their first lead of the series 4-3.

Trey Michaelczewski, Mike Hart and Shamoy Christopher all struck out against Viza in the 6th as the Cougar starter fanned the side. He picked up his 12th and final strikeout in the 7th. Viza was an inch away from a 13th strikeout to end the 7th, but the count went full and Cade Gotta shot an RBI single to left. The brought Sioux Falls within one run and knocked Viza out of the game.
The Cougars got that run back on a BJ Lopez RBI fielder's choice and Anfernee Seymour blasted his third homer of the year in the 8th for extra insurance.
The bullpen finished things off as Ryan Richardson earned a hold and Ben Allison notched his first save with a scoreless 9th.
The Cougars look to end their six-series losing streak Sunday afternoon as the host Sioux Falls for the series finale. Left-hander Josh Tols (2-5, 4.56) will take the mound for the Cougars against the Canaries' righty Charlie Hasty (2-1, 5.44).
