Columbus Catfish News Release
Columbus, Georgia- The Asheville Tourists defeated the Columbus Catfish 16-1 Tuesday night to begin a 4-game series at Golden Park. Asheville racked up 22 hits, including 4 doubles, a triple, and 4 homeruns in a blowout of the Catfish.
Columbus ace Jason Ragan had his roughest outing of the season thus far, only managing to complete 3 innings, allowing 10 hits and 6 runs before being replaced by Chris Fessler in the fourth. Fessler then pitched the next 3 innings and did not fair much better, as he sacrificed 3 more runs on 3 hits and was eventually relieved by Travis Barnett in the seventh inning. Barnett was then touched up for 7 more runs on 9 hits, and was only able to strike out 2. John Baird took over with 2 outs in the ninth to put an end to the Tourists' scoring, but it was too little too late.
Columbus was only able to muster 1 run in the ballgame and a total of 5 hits. The Catfish's run came in the fifth after Mike McCormick led the inning off with a double and was moved to third base on a groundout by Stephen Vogt. First baseman Henry Wrigley then drove in the lone run with a ground ball out to the shortstop Helder Velazquez.
Asheville, on the other hand, totaled 16 hits; including at least 1 hit from every batter in their lineup. Centerfielder Mike Mitchell led the way with 4 hits, including a double, a homer, and 2 RBI. Other contributors included 2B Everth Cabrera, RF Brian Rike, LF Kevin Clark, and 1B Jeff Cunningham who each had 3 hits in the game. When all was said and done, Asheville would send 46 hitters to the plate; 16 of which scored to give the Tourists a 15 run margin of victory.
The Catfish and the Tourists pick up again Wednesday morning for a special 11 A.M. start.
