Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Salisbury, Md.- It may have taken longer than they wanted, but the Shorebirds fought off the pesky Legends on a chilly Tuesday night, besting Lexington 6-5 in 11 innings. Joe Mahoney's two-out single brought home Matt Tucker from second base, giving Delmarva their second extra-inning triumph of the season and bringing the ‘Birds back above the .500 mark on the season.

Delmarva jumped out to a 3-1 lead behind the strong pitching of Luis Noel. In his fifth start of the season, Noel threw five innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Soon after Noel departed, the Shorebirds gained an even greater cushion on Ryan Adams' two run double that put Delmarva up by four, seemingly a comfortable margin.

But things are not always as they seem. The Legends offense, helped by some walks by the Delmarva bullpen, battled back with two runs in the seventh, one in the eighth, and another in the ninth to tie the score at five.

The Shorebirds offense continued to pound the baseball, registering 16 hits on the evening. Six different ‘Birds tallied multi-hit games, led by Wally Crancer's four-for-five effort, but despite all the opportunities, the outcome was very much in doubt until Mahoney delivered the game-winning base-knock in the eleventh.

Brett Bordes earned the victory due to his scoreless eleventh inning on the hill for Delmarva, while Jordan Powell, on the mound at the ballgame's finish, suffered the defeat, his second of the year.
