RiverDogs Take Measure of GreenJackets, 6-3

Zach McAllister pitched eight strong innings and the RiverDogs supplied him with two home runs as Charleston handled the Augusta GreenJackets, 6-3, in South Atlantic League action Tuesday night in front of 2,247 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The first-place RiverDogs win their 20th game in April and improve to 20-5 on the season, while the GreenJackets have dropped five straight and fall to 11-15.

McAllister (3-1), in securing his third victory of the season, pitched the longest outing of any RiverDogs hurler this season. The 6-6, 230-pound, 20-year-old from Chillicothe, Ill, allowed three runs on five hits while striking out six and not walking a batter. He was relieved in the ninth by Jonathan Ortiz, who earned his league-leading eighth save with a 1-2-3 inning.

Charleston, which collected seven hits on the night, got home runs from third baseman Brandon Laird and shortstop Walter Ibarra.

Augusta took a quick 1-0 lead in the second inning when Garrett Baker singled to the mound and advanced to second on McAllister's throwing error. Baker moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball.

Charleston tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on Laird's solo home run to left center field off of GreenJackets starter Oliver Odle (1-3). It was Laird's second bomb of the season and it came off a 1-0 count with one out.

The RiverDogs took the lead for good in the third when Austin Krum walked and moved to third on Abraham Almonte's double to left. Krum then scored and Almonte moved to third when Justin Snyder grounded out to second base. Jesus Montero then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to hand Charleston a 3-1 lead.

The GreenJackets added a run in the fourth when Brock Bond led off with a single, stole second and scored on Thomas Neal's RBI double down the right field line to make the score 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Charleston added a pair of runs with two out. Taylor Holiday singled and scored when Ibarra homered to right center on the first pitch he saw from Odle. It was Ibarra's first round-tripper of the season, and increased the RiverDogs' lead to 5-2.

The hosts added its sixth run in the fifth when Montero doubled and scored on Brian Baisley's RBI single to left. For Montero, the hit marked the 23rd of 25 games this season in which he has collected at least one base knock.

Odle suffered the loss as he threw 4.2 frames and allowed all six runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out one. Daryl Maday relieved Odle in the fifth and threw 3.1 scoreless innings while striking out three and walking one.

Holiday led the RiverDogs offensively with a pair of hits. Bond had a pair for the GreenJackets and extended his current hitting streak to 14 games.

The game lasted only two hours and seven minutes, making it the shortest 9-inning game for Charleston this season.

Game two of this four-game series is set for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston sending right-handed fireballer Dellin Betances (3-0, 2.39 ERA) to the mound while Augusta will go with southpaw Madison Bumgarner (2-2, 5.00 ERA).
