THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... continue their homestand Monday evening with the opener of a critical three-game series against the first-place Visalia Rawhide at Municipal Stadium. San Jose has won a season-high five games in a row and eight out of their last nine after sweeping their most recent series from the visiting Modesto Nuts. The Giants posted a 5-2 victory over the Nuts last Friday before a 7-3 win on Saturday and an 11-5 triumph yesterday afternoon. Thomas Neal led San Jose's 14-hit offensive attack on Sunday as he finished 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, a home run and two RBI's. David Maroul also homered and collected three RBI's while Buster Posey added three hits. The sweep marked San Jose's first since taking four straight games from the Stockton Ports in the opening series of the year at Municipal Stadium from April 9-12.
San Jose Climbs To Within One Game Of Division Lead... The Giants are attempting to make a late push toward the first half North Division title as they enter Monday's contest with a 37-26 overall record - one game behind the Rawhide (38-25) for the top spot in the division. A win in tonight's game would give San Jose a share of first place for the first time since after the fourth game of the season on April 12. The Giants fell a season-high tying five games out of first place after a loss to the Stockton Ports on June 2, but have since gone 9-2 to shave four games off of Visalia's division lead. San Jose set a California League record last year by winning their fourth consecutive first half title. Only seven games remain in the first half. After the current series against the Rawhide, the Giants travel to Stockton for a four-game set beginning on Thursday night to close out the half.
Winning Streaks... In addition to winning a season-high five games in a row, the Giants have claimed six straight victories at Municipal Stadium - their longest streak of the year. San Jose is averaging nine runs per game during their current five-game win streak having outscored the opposition by a 45-17 margin.
Impressive Starting Staff... The Giants have featured a deep starting rotation throughout the entire season with two of their hurlers currently ranking among the top five in the California League in ERA: Clayton Tanner - 2nd (2.96) and Craig Clark - 5th (3.06). Garrett Broshuis (2.89) would also rank among the league leaders, but does not have enough innings to qualify. Scott Barnes and Clark are tied for fifth in the California League with six victories while Clark has notched the fifth-most strikeouts (72). The Giants also recently added Paul Oseguera, San Jose's 2007 Pitcher of the Year, to their roster. Oseguera will make his second start with the Giants this season in tonight's series opener.
Balanced Team Effort... The Giants are currently third in the California League in batting average (.279), second in runs scored (5.4 per game), tied for second in ERA (3.66) and first in fielding percentage (.977). San Jose is also third in home runs (59) while the pitching has issued the fewest walks (163) and tossed the second-most shutouts (5).
Three Giants Selected To All-Star Game... Three San Jose Giants players have been named to the California League All-Star Team and will participate in a game versus the Carolina League All-Stars on June 23rd at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore. Catcher Buster Posey and outfielder Thomas Neal have both been selected as starters while outfielder Roger Kieschnick was chosen as a reserve in the all-star contest. Posey is fourth in the league in RBI's (45) and tied for seventh in home runs (10) to go with a .318 batting average (.410 in June). He's also thrown out 46.9% of attempted base stealers. Neal leads all California League outfielders in hitting with the second-highest batting average overall at .343. He is also ranked among the top five in on-base percentage (4th), home runs (T5th), slugging percentage (5th) and doubles (T5th). Kieschnick, who has homered in three out of his last seven games, is currently batting .293 with nine homers, four triples and 36 RBI's. High Desert (4) is the only team that boasts more All-Star starters than the Giants while just the Lake Elsinore Storm (5) and Mavericks (4) feature more players overall.
Bullpen Excels... Since a 16-7 blowout loss to the Stockton Ports on June 2 that saw the Giants bullpen combine to allow 11 runs, San Jose relievers have posted a stellar 1.24 ERA (5 ER/36.1 IP) over the last 11 games.
Media Coverage... The entire series can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com with Joe Ritzo calling all of the action.
Visalia Rawhide... The Visalia Rawhide, an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, enter the series in first place in the North Division with a 38-25 record - one game ahead of the Giants and two games in front of the Modesto Nuts (36-27). Visalia began the season with 10 straight victories and has held onto the top spot in the division every day throughout the first half. The Rawhide lead the California League with a 3.50 ERA, but are last in batting average (.244) and home runs (29). Visalia is 4-3 this season against the Giants with all the games having been played at Recreation Park. Right-hander Christian Beltre is slated to start on the mound tonight. Beltre is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA versus the Giants this year.
