Vipers to Open GBL Championship Series

The Calgary Vipers are set to open the 2008 California Golden League Championship series on Tuesday night against Gary Carter and the Orange County Flyers. The Flyers won a tough 5 game series against the Long Beach Armada to earn the right to play the Vipers.

Calgary swept the Edmonton Cracker-Cats in three games to advance to their second championship series in as many years.

The Vipers will host game one and two on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 7:05 pm (MDT) with a possibility that game three will also be played in Calgary because the Flyers stadium, Goodwin Field on the campus of Cal-State Fullerton is booked for a concert on Friday night. If a suitable field can not be found by Tuesday a third game would be played in Calgary with games four and five, if necessary on Saturday and Sunday in Anaheim.

The Vipers head into the series well rested after three outstanding performances against Edmonton from their starting pitchers. Joe Sergent, the game one winner takes his 1.17 ERA to the mound in Game 1. Jeff Groeger, who gave up only 2 runs in 8 complete innings in Game 2 will go on Wednesday.

Nate Melek who went 7 complete in the Vipers clinching 8-1 victory puts his 0.00 ERA on the mound in game 3.

Heading into the championship series four Vipers pitchers, Melek, Evan Greusel, Jon Huizinga and Dallas Mahan have ERA's of 0.00.

Offensively, second baseman Jorge Mejia leads the Vipers with a .538 batting average and two home runs. First baseman Kit Pellow is right behind him hitting .429 while eleven year major leaguer Felix Jose is hitting an even .400.

The Vipers also announced a bonus for fans wishing to purchase 2009 season tickets. Until November 1, anyone buying a 2009 season ticket (at 2008 prices) will receive free parking on the Vipers site for the 2009 Grey Cup game.
