Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers will have to wait a season to visit Mexico and to have the Tijuana Potros play in Alberta.

The Golden Baseball League announced today that the expansion Tijuana Potros have been forced to shelve their plans to participate in the upcoming 2009 Golden Baseball League season due to the impact of the health risk issues that have erupted throughout Mexico in the last few weeks. Sports facility closings, uncertainty of stadium availability, and government mandates limiting public gatherings have all contributed to an impossible business environment to launch and operate a professional sports franchise with the start of the season less than two weeks away.

"The Vipers are obviously disappointed with this development", said Peter Young, Vipers director of baseball operations. "We were looking forward to playing before the huge crowds in Tijuana and to having Darryl Brinkley return to our park in a visitor's uniform".

The Vipers will now have a three day break in early August. "We will now be hosting a coaches clinic on Friday, August 7th", added Young. "It will give us the opportunity to offer teaching by our coaching staff including former major leaguers Morgan Burkhart and Boots Day". Coaches from T-ball up to the senior levels of Little League baseball will be invited to attend.

The Vipers will then host a two day Amateur Baseball Camp on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9 at Foothills Stadium.

Season ticket holders will be offered six free tickets to any Vipers game throughout the season to compensate for the loss of games in the schedule.

Reminder:

Media Conference

The Vipers will also hold their pre-season media conference on Friday, May 8 at 1.30 pm in conjunction with the Grand Opening of the new Absolute Baseball Academy. The team will also be welcoming hockey's Golden Jet, Bobby Hull, who will be in town for a Vipers Open House on Saturday. The 16,000 square foot indoor facility adjacent to Foothills Stadium will feature the only Pro-Batter video pitching machine in the city as well as 8 batting cages and a full artificial turf infield.

Vipers players will be available following their Friday workout and will be testing their skills against the "video pitching machine".

The Vipers Snakes and Batters Children's Foundation will also be presenting cheques to the Calgary Breast Cancer Supportive Care Foundation, KidSport Calgary and Challenger Little League. Snakes and Batters will be distributing more than $30,000 back into the amateur baseball community in Calgary.

Media members and sponsors will also be invited to take their cuts in the batting cages.
