Vipers Take Series Lead

The Calgary Vipers used 16 hits to defeat the Tucson Toros 9-8 at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. With the victory the Vipers take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five Golden Baseball League Championship Series. At the plate the bottom half of the order did the damage led by Wilver Perez who went three-for-five with three runs scored and two batted in. Rick Guarno also went three-for-five with three runs batted in while Drew Miller was three-for-four with two runs scored and one batted in.

Isaac Hess (2-0) picked up the win throwing five and two-third innings while giving up five runs and striking out four. Mac Suzuki (2) took the save after pitching a three-up, three-down ninth inning with the Vipers up by one run. Jason Jacome (0-1) received the loss in giving up 12 hits and six runs in his four and a third innings.

Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Fehlandt Lentini doubled, stole third base, and scored on a throwing error for a 1-0 advantage.

The Vipers added to their lead in the second frame as Wilver Perez singled, Drew Miller doubled, Rick Guarno plated one with a base hit, and Jorge Mejia made the score 3-0 with a run batted in fielder's choice.

Tucson tied the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the third as Skip Adams walked, Junior Spivey doubled, Dustin Yount singled in one, Lino Garcia hit a sacrifice fly, and Mayo Santana knocked in a third tally with a base hit.

The Toros took the lead in the fourth inning as Spivey singled, Yount doubled, and Garcia cashed a run with a sacrifice fly for a 4-3 advantage.

In the top of the fifth Calgary retook the lead as Nelson Castro and Sergio Pedroza singled while Perez scored both with a two-run double. Miller followed with a RBI base knock for a 6-4 lead.

Spivey brought Tucson within one run at 6-5 in the home half of the sixth frame with a solo home run.

The Snakes responded in the next half inning to increase their lead to 9-5 as all with two outs Perez singled, Miller walked, Colin Moro brought home one with a base hit, and Guarno knocked in two with a double.

Andre Marshall hit a solo home run for the Toros in the bottom of the seventh for a 9-6 score.

Tucson made it a one-run game again in the eighth frame as Ryan Priddy singled, Spivey walked, and both Yount and Jim Rushford singled in runs for a 9-8 score.

This series continues with Game 2 on Thursday September 10th at 8:00 PM MST with Joe Sergent (1-0, 8.03) toeing the rubber for the Snakes.

Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Friday September 11th at 7:05 PM MDT for Game 3.

If necessary Games 4 & 5 will also be in Calgary on Saturday September 12th at 4:05 PM MDT and Sunday September 13th at 3:05 PM MDT.
