
Vipers Stay Perfect with 139-126 Win over Delaware

HIDALGO, Texas, TIME @ "MMMM d, yyyy" December 5, 2013 - Chris Johnson led the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (6-0) with 32 points in a 139-126 win over the Delaware 87ers (0-4) today at State Farm Arena. With today's win, the Vipers have won 22 straight games since March 16, 2013. The Vipers also continued to be hot from behind the arc and connected on 21 three-point shots.
In addition to Johnson, the Vipers were led by Troy Daniels with 30 points, followed by Isaiah Canaan with 26 points. Robert Covington added 13 points, and Tim Ohlbrecht tallied 11 points.
Kendall Marshall led the 87ers with a double-double 31 points, 10 assists. Reeves Nelson added 28 points. Thanasis Antetokounm contributed 17 points. Damian Saunders recorded 11 points and Rodney Williams put up 10 points.
After Tuesday's 153-109 loss to the Vipers, Delaware came out fighting in the first quarter. During the first, the Vipers largest lead was 9-2 with 9:42 on the clock. The 87ers tied the game four times, and at the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 31 points.
Rodney Williams made two free throws to put Delaware ahead 33-31 to start the second quarter. The 87ers held their last lead of the game 42-40 after Marshall sank a shot from behind the arc. James Johnson connected on a dunk to tie the score at 42 points, and Daniels followed with a three-pointer to give the Vipers a 45-42 lead. RGV held their largest lead of the first half, 15 points twice before heading into halftime on top 74-62.
RGV held the lead throughout the third quarter, and was up by as much 16 points, 105-89 on a hook shot from Ohlbrecht with 1:27 remaining in the quarter. The 87ers responded with a 9-3 run to close their deficit to 108-98 by the end of the third.
One minute into the fourth quarter, Marshall shot a three-pointer that put Delaware within five points, 108-103. However, Canaan followed up with a shot from behind the arc to keep the Vipers in control 111-103. The 87ers were not able to catch up. RGV won 139-126.
This weekend, the Vipers hit the road to face the Iowa Energy Sunday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. (CT). On Tuesday, Dec. 10, RGV will be back at home to host the Reno Bighorns at 7 p.m. (CT) at State Farm Arena.
