Vipers Sign AAA Veteran

The Calgary Vipers have signed infielder Brian Rios for the upcoming 2011 North American League season. The 36-year-old enters into his 16th professional season in a career where he has played 205 games at the AAA level including being named a AAA International League All-Star in 2001. Last year the 6'2" 220-pounder was named a Golden Baseball League All-Star with Victoria as he finished 11th in games played (84), 13th in doubles (21), 16th in batting average (.337), and 19th in home runs (9).

Rios has spent the last seven years in Independent baseball after eight seasons in Affiliated ball. The Twentynine Palms, California resident was drafted in the 18th round by the Detroit Tigers out of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma and has also spent time in the Baltimore Orioles organization.

Brian will act as a player coach on the Vipers after serving in the same role last season with the Seals.

The Vipers will be holding a media conference on Monday May 9th at 12:00 pm at Foothills Stadium with all partners and friends invited.

Spring Training will be held at the preseason home of the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale, Arizona at Scottsdale Stadium starting on Saturday May 14th.

Calgary starts the 2011 regular season on the road in Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday May 24th with a double-header against Jose Canseco and the Scorpions.

The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.
