Vipers Set To Open Camp

May 7, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

Today the Calgary Vipers announce the 33 players that will compete for 22 regular season roster spots on the Golden Baseball League's defending champions when training camp officially opens tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM.

2009 G.B.L. Manager of the Year Morgan Burkhart returns for his second season at the helm and fourth year with the Vipers in total. Burkhart will be once again joined by Hitting/Bench Coach Boots Day and new pitching coach Mike Snyder.

Making up the core of the team are four returning members: franchise player Drew Miller, pitching ace Joe Sergent, two-time G.B.L. all-star Jorge Mejia, and AAA veteran Caonabo Cosme.

Also returning are: nine game winner Erik Dessau, fourth year Viper catcher Kevin Price, British Columbia native Dillon O'Krane, and second year pitchers Andrew DeMott and Brian Oliver.

Highlighting the newcomers are a couple of former Major Leaguer's in outfielder Julio Ramirez and pitcher Anastacio Martinez. Veteran AAA catcher Luis Taveras will also bring his experience to the team behind the plate.

The Calgary Vipers travel to Kamloops, British Columbia May 11th - 13th to host a baseball clinic followed by two preseason games against the Victoria Seals. On May 15th the team is hosting a Meet & Greet and serving up a BBQ Burger Cook-off at the Main Dish in Calgary. The Vipers open up the 2010 Golden Baseball League season on May 19th with a seven game road-trip through Yuma and Tucson, Arizona.

Opening Day is scheduled for May 27th at Foothills Stadium with the Strong Warriors of Maui, Hawaii making their first ever appearance in Calgary. Maui is one of two new teams in the G.B.L. with Tijuana, Mexico being the other. The league now stretches over three countries and three different time zones and this season a new rule change has been implemented that will eliminate the designated hitter and allow pitchers to bat for themselves.
