Vipers Set for Playoffs

Tonight, Tuesday September 1st, at 7:00 PM MDT the Calgary Vipers start the North Division Championship Series with Game 1 in Edmonton against the Capitals. Joe Sergent (7-3, 3.88) will toe the rubber for the Snakes against Lou Pote (9-3, 3.98) for the Capitals. Sergent finished the season seventh in the league in wins, ninth in earned run average, and tenth in strikeouts (72). Pote meanwhile was third in wins, fourth in strikeouts (87), and 11th in E.R.A.

The Vipers had a terrific season offensively setting new Golden Baseball League season records for team batting average at .332 and on-base percentage at .407. Nine players in the league finished with at least 100 hits and seven of those were from Calgary.

Nelson Castro led the way with the league's top batting average at .410 which also set a new Vipers single-season record. Castro also led the league in hits (123), triples (10), stolen bases (33), and slugging percentage (.647). He was also second in runs (80), third in both runs batted in (81) and on-base percentage (.460), and seventh in home runs (11).

Fehlandt Lentini also had a huge season for Calgary leading the league in runs scored with 98 which also set a new Snakes single-season record. Lentini also led the G.B.L. in doubles (33) and stolen bases (33). He was second in hits (122), third in batting average (.366), fifth in slugging percentage (.583) and seventh in home runs (11).

Colin Moro followed up his 2008 G.B.L. Rookie of the Year campaign by leading the league in on-base percentage at .472. Moro also led the league in hit by pitches (18), was second in batting average (.376), fifth in hits (103), sixth in RBI (65), and tenth in slugging percentage (.540).

Drew Miller wrapped up another fine campaign with the Vipers finishing second in the league in both on-base percentage (.468) and hit by pitches (17), third in doubles (28), fourth in both batting average (.364) and slugging percentage (.593), seventh both in runs scored (71) and home runs (11), and ninth in hits (100).

Jorge Mejia finished sixth in both hits (102) and stolen bases (24), ninth in walks (39), tenth in batting average (.341), 11th in runs scored (64) and 12th in on-base percentage (.425).

Rick Guarno finished second in the league in hit by pitches (17) and fifth in doubles (27).

Newcomers Sergio Pedroza and Wilver Perez also had great seasons which started in Victoria and wrapped up in Calgary. Pedroza led the league in home runs (20), was second in base on balls (58), third in both RBI (81) and slugging percentage (.605), fifth in on-base percentage (.444), and eighth in hits (101). Perez meanwhile was third in runs scored (79), third in doubles (28), fourth in hits (104), sixth in stolen bases (24), and seventh in walks (40).

Game 2 of the N.D.C.S will also be in Edmonton on Wednesday September 2nd at 7:00 PM MDT. Isaac Hess (9-2, 4.59) will take to the mound for the Vipers against Jose Lima (6-7, 3.95) of the Capitals. Hess finished the year first in the league in strikeouts (99), third in wins, and 16th in earned run average. Lima meanwhile was tenth in both E.R.A. and strikeouts (67) while 14th in victories.

The Vipers host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series in Calgary at Foothills Stadium against the Capitals on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. Evan Greusel (6-3, 6.81) will start for the Snakes against Chris Little (7-3, 5.06) of Edmonton.

If necessary Games 4 & 5 will also be held in Calgary at Foothills Stadium on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT.
