Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release
ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), found themselves down to Danbury by four goals midway through the third period of the final game of a four-game series with the Trashers. Roanoke attempted to catch up to the division rival Danbury, but fell short, only able to come up with two late goals as they avoided the shutout and fell by a final of 4-2.
Dave MacIsaac and David Hymovitz each scored a goal for the Trashers in the opening period of play, giving Danbury an early advantage. Roanoke's offense kept the pressure on and almost came through with a goal late in the period, but the Vipers couldn't get the puck in the net as Danbury skated off with a 2-0 lead after one.
Sergei Durdin added another goal at 16:31 of the second, and as the buzzer sounded, ending the period, it appeared as though Trashers netminder Jayme Platt might earn his second shutout in three games against the Vipers. Jamie Thompson put in the fourth goal for the Trashers at the 10:26 mark of the third period on which Carlyle Lewis added his third assist of the night.
Jan Jas would bring the Vipers life and the crowd of 1,042 at the Roanoke Civic Center to their feet. Jas scored with assists from Travis Smith and the hot L.P. Martin at the 12:58 mark to spoil Platt's hopes of a shutout. New Viper winger Mike Wiggins scored for the first time in a Vipers uniform just minutes later at 15:50 with the assistance of Smith and Petr Jelinek to cut the Trashers lead to two. Both Vipers goals came on the power play.
The Vipers continued to put pressure on the Trashers defense, but simply ran out of time in their late rally, losing by a final score of 4-2 and thus splitting the series with Danbury 2-2. The Trashers move into first place in the UHL Eastern Division with the win, surpassing the Adirondack Frostbite, who had held the position for the majority of the season. The Vipers fall back to 9-12-4 (22 points) and remain in a lock for third place in the division with the Richmond RiverDogs, who had the day off. The Vipers have a chance Tuesday to pull ahead in the standings as they face these same RiverDogs at the Roanoke Civic Center.
