Calgary Vipers News Release

Due to unplayable field conditions at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta the Golden Baseball League game between the Calgary Vipers and the Chico Outlaws has been suspended in the top of the tenth inning until Saturday at 5:05 PM (MDT) when the game will be resumed. After the first half inning the game was delayed for 40 minutes and the rain came back in the tenth inning and soaked the diamond making the game unplayable. The regularly scheduled game for tomorrow will be played 20 minutes after the conclusion of the finish of this extra-inning game. Chico will have the 7-6 lead in the top of the tenth inning when play resumes and also Todd Gossage at third base, two outs, and a 2-1 count on Gabriel Riley.

Drew Miller slugged his league leading ninth homerun in the bottom of the second inning to give Calgary the early 1-0 lead. For Miller it was his fourth homerun in as many games.

In the bottom of the third inning Jose Morban led off with a walk and after stealing second base scored on a Felix Jose double. Miller drove in Jose with a single for his second RBI of the game.

Chico responded in the top of the fourth inning and was helped out by two Calgary errors. Steve Boggs and Jose Valdez started off the inning with singles and Casey Garrison reached on a fielding error by Vipers third baseman Travis Drader to allow Boggs to score. Lino Garcia knocked in Valdez for the second run with a sacrifice fly, Gabriel Riley singled, and Gerardo Verastegui walked to load the bases. For Evan Greusel it was his first base on balls given up in 29 innings. With the bases loaded Eric Pringle laid down a bunt which Greusel threw home for the force out but catcher Patrick Arlis wasn't able to catch the toss and both Garrison and Riley scored to take the 4-3 lead.

A run was added in the top of the fifth inning by the Outlaws on a Boggs single, a groundout to move Boggs to second base, and a two out RBI single from Todd Gossage for the 5-3 advantage.

That run was matched by the Snakes in the bottom of the inning with a Jose single, Miller hit by pitch, and a Arlis RBI double.

Jose Morban hammered his sixth homerun of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at five.

Right back came Chico in the top of the seventh inning with a solo homerun from Valdez to retake the lead at 6-5.

In the bottom of the ninth inning Nelson Castro singled and was almost picked off first base but stole second and Miller was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to put two runners on. Arlis followed with a infield single that was knocked down by second baseman Jesse Kovacs with a dive where he also injured himself. On the same play Castro tried to score but Kovacs flipped the ball to shortstop Pringle and he threw home just in time to tag out Castro. With two outs Colin Moro singled up the middle for a clutch RBI to tie the game at six with Miller crossing the plate.

Once again the Outlaws responded though in the top of the tenth inning when Casey Garrison smoked his first long ball of the season to give his team the lead back at 7-6.

Jose is three-for-five at the plate with two runs scored and a RBI and also is potentially up fourth in the bottom of the tenth. Miller is two-for-three with two runs scored, two RBI, and two hit by pitches. Miller has now hit six homeruns in seven games played at Foothills Stadium.

Evan Greusel started for the Vipers and tossed eight innings allowing only two earned runs while striking out three and walking one in a no-decision.

This series continues Saturday June 14th at 5:05 PM (MDT) with the conclusion of this game and it's Ripley's Believe It or Not Day at Foothills Stadium. A full contingent from the famous tourist attraction will be in Calgary to take possession of the 10 bats acquired in the Odom trade and to present the check to the Vipers Children's Charity.

On Sunday, June 15th at 1:35 PM (MDT) it's the Vipers Father's Day Extravaganza with Reggie Rivard (0-0) getting the ball. Hall of Famer Gary Carter will be the Vipers special guest to throw out the first pitch and sign autographs. The Calgary Minor Softball Association will be holding their Opening ceremonies following the game and will be out in full force.
