Vipers Fall Short Against Spurs

EDINBURG, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (12-6), the NBA G League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, fell 122-104 to the Austin Spurs (11-8) on Wednesday night at Bert Ogden Arena.

To begin the game the Spurs went on a 6-0 run and took a 9-4 lead. The team maintained the advantage until the clock struck 5:03, that was when the Vipers took the upper hand and sealed the first quarter 24-18.

RGV tipped off the second quarter with the lead but were halted by the Spurs with 4:45 to go. For three minutes the lead changed between both teams, but in the end the Vipers pulled away with a 56-52 advantage.

In the third quarter the Vipers had a 62-61 lead until 8:19 when the Spurs started to inch in. There were multiple lead changes in the quarter, but the visiting team was the one who came out on top and closed the third quarter with an 82-76 lead.

Austin got the momentum going in the fourth quarter as the team started off with a 14-2 run. The visiting team continued with the momentum and ended the game with a 122-104 victory.

Ray Spalding led RGV with 24 points. Jarrett Culver put up 19 points followed by Trhae Mitchell with 16 and Darius Days with 15 points. Also scoring in the double digits was Shawn Occeus with 10 points.

San Antonio Spurs Two-Way Mamadi Diakite led all scorers with a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds. RaiQuan Gray put up 21 points followed by Paul Watson with 17 points. David Duke Jr. hit a triple-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Vipers will head to All-Star break starting Friday, Feb. 16 and will conclude on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The team will then travel to Iowa to take on the Wolves on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. CST at Wells Fargo Arena. The game can be viewed on www.NBAGLeague.com.
