Vipers Capture Championship

The Calgary Vipers claimed their first ever Golden Baseball League Championship with a 18-10 victory over the Tucson Toros before 2212 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. With the win the Vipers capture the best-of-five series three games to one. After falling one win short of a championship for two straight years the Vipers have finally taken home the elusive title. At the plate Calgary collected -21 hits and scored three separate four-run innings to go along with one three-run frame.

Sergio Pedroza capped off a terrific series and took home G.B.L. Championship Finals Most Valuable Player as he went three-for-six with six runs batted in and three runs scored. For the series Pedroza was nine-for-19 for a .474 batting average while knocking in and scoring eight runs.

Fehlandt Lentini also had a big night at the plate going four-for-five with four runs scored while Kit Pellow was three-for-six with four runs batted in.

Evan Greusel (2-0) started for the Vipers and threw five and a third innings giving up three earned runs for the victory. Pete Sikaras was solid out of the bullpen throwing an inning and two-thirds without giving up a run.

Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning as Lentini walked, Nelson Castro singled, Pedroza plated a run with a base hit, Pellow doubled home one, Wilver Perez hit a sacrifice fly, and Drew Miller singled in another for a 4-0 lead.

The Vipers added a run in the second for a 5-0 advantage as Jorge Mejia doubled, Lentini singled, and Castro hit a sacrifice fly.

In the home half of the fourth frame Calgary stretched their lead as Rick Guarno and Lentini singled, Castro knocked in one with a double, and Pellow came through with a clutch two-out run batted in base knock for a 8-0 score.

Tucson got onto the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning as Junior Spivey singled, stole second base, and scored when Dustin Yount reached on a fielding error for a 8-1 game.

Right back responded the Snakes in the next half inning as Colin Moro singled, Guarno was hit by a pitch, Mejia sacrificed both into scoring position with a bunt, Lentini plated one with a base hit, Castro cashed one with a sacrifice fly, Pedroza doubled another home, and Pellow singled in a fourth for a 12-1 lead.

The Toros got those four runs back in the top of the sixth as Jim Rushford singled, Andre Marshall hit a two-run homer, Mayo Santana walked, Ryan Priddy reached on an error which allowed Santana to score, and Skip Adams drove in one with a single for a 12-5 score.

Again Calgary responded in the bottom of the frame as Moro walked, Lentini singled, Castro walked to load the bases, and Pedroza smoked a mammoth grand slam for a 16-5 advantage.

The scoring continued for the Vipers in the bottom of the seventh as Perez walked, Moro was hit by a pitch, and Guarno and Mejia both singled in runs for a 18-5 lead.

Tucson plated three runs in the eighth as Luis Apodaca singled, Adams walked, Spivey doubled in one, and Yount singled in two more for a 18-8 game.

The Toros scored two more tallies in the ninth for a 18-10 final as Marshall doubled, Santana singled in one, and Marshall scored when Adams reached on an error.
