Tucson Toros News Release

Calgary, CAN - The Tucson Toros' magical 2009 season came to a close Saturday night when the team fell to the Calgary Vipers 18-10 in Game 4 of the GBL Championship Series. The loss ended Tucson's hopes for a comeback in the series, finalizing a 3-1 series win for the 2009 GBL Champion Vipers. The game wrapped up a fantastic inaugural GBL season for the Toros that included GBL Southern Division second half title and an amazing comeback series win over St. George in the Southern Divisional Series to reach the Championship Series in their first season.

It was all offense for both squads on Saturday, just one night after Toros starter Dustin Glant shutdown Calgary's power offense for 9 innings on Friday. The Vipers were able to outslug the Toros in Game 4 however, scoring 18 runs on 21 hits. Together both squads combined for 35 hits in the slugfest.

Calgary went up big early scoring the first 8 runs of the game before Tucson was able to get on the board with a run in the top of the 5th. Calgary responded with 4 in the bottom of the frame to make the score 12-1 after 5. The Toros were able to narrow the gap with 4 runs of their own in the 6th, thanks in part to a 2-run home run by Rightfielder Andre Marshall, his 2nd of the post season and 11th in overall this season. The Vipers countered will another 4 runs on a grand slam by Sergio Pedroza in the bottom of the 6th to put the game out of reach.

Junior Spivey remained hot for the Toros with 3 more hits, giving him 9 in 18 at bats against the Vipers this series including a homer, 3 doubles and 10 runs scored. Marshall also had 3 hits Saturday with a pair of RBI and runs scored.

The Toros would like to thank the Tucson community for all your support during a wonderful inaugural season and are looking forward to another exciting year in 2010! Go Toros!
