Vipers bats pound Cats

The Calgary Vipers showed why they have a .311 team batting average as they hammered out 12 runs on 16 hits in a 12-6 victory over The Edmonton Cracker-Cats in front of 1488 spectators at TELUS Field Friday night. Calgary left-fielder Drew Miller, hitting out of the lead off spot, went 3 for 5 with 2 runs batted in, while 1st baseman Jason Colson hit a 2 run homer, his 11th of the season, in the 4th. The Vipers enjoyed a 3 run 2nd, a 3 run 3rd, 2 more in the 4th, 2 again in the 7th, and 1 more in the 8th.

Edmonton starter Mike Henry 1-7, pitched the opening 3 innings allowing 7 earned runs on 8 hits, and 3 Cat pitchers mopped up in relief. Calgary starter Chris Shutt gave up back to back home runs in the 2nd inning, a 3 run shot by George Sandell, and a solo blast by Rob Recuenco, but pitched the opening 5 innings to improve to 7 and 2.

The series resumes Saturday night the 1-1 Cats will send out RHP Mike Johnson (0-3), the 1-1 Vipers will counter with LHP Jordie Alexander (4-2).
