Vieira to throw out first pitch opening night

New Haven County Cutters News Release
Very few things remain constant in the world of sports, especially within the coaching ranks. Just don't tell that to University of New Haven baseball coach Frank (Porky) Vieira.
The New Haven County Cutters have invited Vieira to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on opening night. The Cutters think that it is only fitting that the man synonymous with baseball success in New Haven be the one to open up the 2005 season.
For the past 43 seasons, Vieira has been guiding the Chargers from the dugout and setting all sorts of records along the way. He has picked up 1,092 victories, second most in Division II history, and has a winning percentage that is hovering slightly above .775, which is the highest ever in Division II. UNH has gone to 17 College World Series under his tenure and produced more than 60 professional baseball players.
Vieira has been the only baseball coach in the school's history.
Opening night at Yale Field is on Monday, May 30 (Memorial Day) at 6:05 against the Grays, the traveling team of the Can-Am League. Vieira's pitch will signal the start of the game and there will be an explosive fireworks show after the final out has been recorded.
Brooks Powers Two-Run Homer
For the second day in a row, Manager Mike Church watched his team compete in a five-inning intra-squad game Thursday, focused on determining who will be slotted where in his starting lineup. The game was highlighted by a towering two-run home run by third baseman Jeff Brooks that cleared the leftfield fence with ease.
Starters Nick Maness, Rolando Valles, Tim Keinath and Ryan Bonesio all threw two innings. They will pitch again on Sunday when the Cutters welcome the Worcester Tornadoes to Yale Field for an exhibition game starting at 2:05. Tickets for the game are $3.
Second baseman Marshall Smith had to leave the team to return to his home in Georgia due to an illness in the family. It is uncertain when Smith, who was in competition for the starting second base job, will return to the team.
Home Run Derby Postponed
The Cutters Home Run Derby originally scheduled for Saturday has been rescheduled for Monday, June 20.
